In the last three years we have sold all of our commercial bull calves at weaning to a dairy farmer in early April, which have averaged over 300kgs,2014 they were 312kg.
Last year we sold 10 bull calves at the 2nd Balclutha calf sale for $800 which was the top price on the day, these calves averaged 327kg.
In 2013 we won the junior section of the Otago/Southland Beef Competition with a 256kg 3/4 Limo heifer.
In total there were 41 entries,26 of these had limousin genetics only 6 of these had an EMA of under 100,carcasses ranged from 210kg up to 460kg,Limousin won all 3 classes.
Hook results at the Beef Expo there were 55 entries, only 3 carcasses had an EMA of more than 100 and the highest dressing out % was 52%.
In May we killed 3 steers at SFF, with the best LimoX steer killing 344kgs and a 61.6% yield at 20 months, also a traditional Hereford/FresianX was killed @ 275kg and a yield of 54.4%.The other Limo/Angus steer killed 301kgs and a yield of 57.3%.
Basically if these steers were the same liveweight then the LimoX steers have 15- 36kg extra carcass weight combined with approx 25% more meat on the 5 prime cuts!!
